Painting an Inspirational Butterfly: A Step-by-Step Journey
Hi friends! Today, I’m so excited to share with you the steps to paint a beautiful, colorful butterfly while having fun and making it your own. Whether you’re an experienced artist or just starting, this project is perfect for everyone—and trust me, there’s no such thing as messing up here. Let’s dive in!
Setting the Stage
For this project, I used a pre-traced canvas. If you’ve purchased one of my kits, you’re already set with everything you need: the canvas, brushes, paint, and even a step-by-step video tutorial to guide you 24/7. All you need to grab is a table covering, some water, paper towels, and maybe a cup of tea. Art and tea—can it get better than that?
I started with one of my favorite colors, peacock blue, and mixed it with white to tone it down a bit. When creating the background, I aim for something messy yet full of character. Remember, a good background isn’t just filler—it’s the stage for the star of your painting. So, let loose and have fun blending colors. My trick? Keep the paint wet to help blend the shades smoothly.

The Butterfly Takes Shape
Now for the fun part—our butterfly! I broke the process into sections: the outer wings, the middle section, and the body. To keep things lively, I chose bright, happy colors like pink, yellow, lavender, and, of course, more peacock blue. You can switch it up—lime green, coral, or even a metallic gold would look amazing. Butterflies are all about being unique, just like you.
As I filled in the wings, I thought of painting like making a pizza. (Yes, pizza!) You start with the dough—your base layers—and build up to the delicious toppings—the details. So, if your painting looks a little “meh” at first, don’t worry! Keep going, and it will come together beautifully.
Adding Details and Personal Touches
Here’s where the magic happens: adding the body, cleaning up edges with black paint, and adding highlights. I love using my trusty liner brush for those tiny details. If a liner brush isn’t your thing, no worries! A paint pen or even a sharpie works just as well. There are no rules in art, and that’s the beauty of it.
Finally, I added words to my butterfly. This is your chance to make it personal. I wrote “I am” on mine and filled the wings with words like “unique,” “strong,” and “giving.” You can write anything that inspires you—your favorite quote, your mantra, or even a loved one’s name. Let it be a reminder of what makes you, you.
Wrapping It Up
Once your butterfly is complete, take a step back and admire your work. You created something uniquely yours. Don’t forget to sign your painting—I’ve been working on my signature, and it’s so satisfying to add that final touch. If you’re feeling brave, share your masterpiece with me! I’d love to see it.
