5 Reasons Why Progress, Mental Health, and Joy Matter More Than Perfection in Art

As an acrylic artist, who has been painting for over 15 years, I’ve learned that the journey of creation is just as important—if not more so—than the final product. Art isn’t about creating a perfect piece; it’s about the joy and healing we find along the way. For me, it is about the Joy and Feelings I found during a period of deep grief. Feelings and Joy I want to help others find too.

Here are five reasons why embracing progress over perfection is essential for our mental health and overall well-being:

1. Self-Expression and Emotional Release

Art provides a powerful outlet for self-expression. When we paint, we tap into our emotions, allowing us to explore feelings that might be difficult to articulate. This process can be cathartic, helping us to release stress, anxiety, or sadness. By prioritizing progress over perfection, we give ourselves permission to create freely, reflecting our true selves without the fear of judgment.

2. The Joy of the Creative Process

Creating art should be a joyful experience! Focusing on perfection can create pressure that stifles creativity. When we shift our mindset to appreciate the process—mixing colors, experimenting with techniques, and enjoying the tactile experience of paint—we rediscover the simple pleasures of creation. Each brushstroke becomes a celebration, not a competition. Step by Step Video tutorials like mine on Youtube, can help you create and paint without stress and struggle.

3. Building Resilience and Growth

Every artist faces challenges and setbacks. Embracing progress means recognizing that mistakes are part of the journey. Instead of seeing flaws as failures, we can view them as opportunities for growth. Always remember, "It's JUST PAINT". This mindset fosters resilience, teaching us to adapt and evolve our skills. Over time, we build confidence not just in our art, but in our ability to navigate life in general.

4. Community and Connection

Art has a unique way of bringing people together. When we create without the pressure of perfection, we open the door for collaboration and connection with others. Sharing our work, experiences, and even our struggles fosters a sense of community. Encouraging others to join us in their artistic journeys creates bonds that enrich our lives, reminding us that we’re not alone in our pursuits. In person and virtual paint parties are a great way to share and create together.

5. Mindfulness and Self-Care

Engaging in art can be a form of mindfulness, allowing us to focus on the present moment. When we let go of the need for perfection, we can immerse ourselves in the rhythm of painting, grounding ourselves in the here and now. This practice promotes relaxation and reduces stress, making art a powerful tool for self-care. It reminds us to take a break from our busy lives and reconnect with ourselves. Even if it is only for 20 minutes. I know we are all busy but self care is not selfish.

At the heart of art lies a simple truth: it’s about the journey, not just the destination. By embracing progress over perfection, we are creating a more fulfilling relationship with ourselves. So pick up that brush, let go of your inhibitions, and allow yourself to create. The joy, healing, and connections you’ll find along the way are worth every stroke.
